Film-makers Rakesh Sharma, Gaurav Jani and Praveen Kumar yesterday (on Sept14)registered their protest with the President of India during the NationalFilm Awards ceremony organised by the Ministry for Information & Broadcasting. Each of them handed over a protest petition to the President as they went up to collect their awards. The film-makers were protesting against the growing harassment of documentary film-makers by the police and officials from the CBFC (Central Board for Film Certification).

Seruppu is a socio-cultural documentary on the lives of Catholic Arundhatiyars (Dalits/harijans/untouchables) of Dharmanathapuram, an old slum located at the heart of Tiruchirappalli in Tamilnadu, a southern state in India. The people of Dharmanathapuram are involved in making footwear, one of the traditional caste based occupations within India. More ....

BE is the international abbreviation for Belgium – the country where the main part of our exciting selection of independent films originates. The Cinema Nova is a single screen movie theatre located in the heart of Brussels. For the last 10 years, the Nova has been run by volunteers, who aim to give a space to independent cinema and to explore different cinematographic cultures through documentary, fiction (short and long) and experimental films.

Some of you may know of Vikalp - the first Indian festival of documentary films that we organised in 2004 as a protest against censorship at Mumbai International film festival.

The Government of India thinks you are stupid, I am an imbecile, indeed each person who steps into any cinema hall is an idiot. The Government is deeply concerned about us, which is why it has appointed wise men to take care of us. Collectively, they inhabit this space called the Censor Board and toil day and night to keep us from plunging headlong into a life of sin. Their boss is usually a retired or out of work actor. He may have molested countless women on screen or she may have gyrated in a sequined bikini, but they discover hitherto hidden reserves of morality as soon as they are appointed to the Censor Board...

We are shocked to hear about the intimidation and harassment faced by the well-known Indian film-maker Rakesh Sharma in New York on May 13, 2005. NYPD personnel 'detained and interrogated' him for 3 hours and subjected him to verbal and physical abuse.
